MORE THAN WORDS

Communication is a
powerful force for change.

The way we communicate dictates just how significant a change we can make: in our companies, our communities, and our world. This book is designed to help you realize your own power as a communicator through a more-than-words approach grounded in courage, care, and clarity.

What’s Inside?

Whether you're trying to drive an organization to more equitable outcomes or are thinking about the role you individually play on a team, your good thoughts and well-intended actions may lead to unintended consequences. This book will help you realize your power as a communicator and show how directly you can impact an outcome.

How do we know? Because Carrie Fox has lived this work for the past twenty years, supporting hundreds of organizations and their leaders. The most effective, impactful, and inclusive of those leaders all share set of essential characteristics: they lead with care, courage, and clarity, even in the most complex of times. Together those qualities inform the four practices of leadership that Carrie breaks down in the book:

THE FIRST PRACTICE

Dare to Ask

A leader—whether an executive, board member, or team manager—is willing to challenge and change a norm. Rather than defaulting to the expected spokesperson or communications strategy, courageous leaders see the opportunity to tell a story from a different lens.

THE SECOND PRACTICE

Dig Down to The Roots

Rather than communicating superficially, courageous leaders are willing to look and look again at the issues in front of them. They are ready to disrupt and challenge dominant norms and patterns to elicit true social change.

THE THIRD PRACTICE

See Your Story as Bigger Than the Moment

The leaders presented in this book are truly leaders of movements, not of moments. They rely on a wide lens to understand the world around them and their place in it. Courageous leaders realize the power of their words and actions to move people, organizations, and issues forward. They aren’t in it for short-term gain but rather the long-term impact.

THE FOURTH PRACTICE

Follow Through

The examples in this book are not one-and-done strategies. They are ways of living and showing up in service to the world that requires continuous commitment and care. To become a courageous leader and effective social change communicator, you, too, must develop your practice and follow through, over and over and over again.

More than Words is an invitation to join our community of practice; to lean into the best version of yourself as a leader, and to learn how you can use communication as a force for good.
